Snart er det vårsol og sang i skogen
Selma Bjørnseth Hegstad’s most personal photography project, Snart er det vårsol og sang i skogen (2025), is a documentary photography book that explores her 94-year-old grandfather’s life in his new reality at an assisted living facility and his stay at a hospital, interwoven with glimpses of his past and his relationship with Selma’s father (56).

About the project
What & when?
This project, including its description, was independently developed and created by Selma Bjørnseth Hegstad as part of the semester project for the course “Fotografi og bildeforståelse” in autumn 2025.
The title?
The Norwegian title, Snart er det vårsol og sang i skogen, can be directly translated to English as Soon there will be spring sunshine and song in the forest.
The title was inspired by a Christmas card her grandfather sent a few years ago, on which these words were written. The card is also photographed and featured in the book.
Editing tools?
Adobe Lightroom Classic was used for all image-related editing.
Adobe InDesign was used for designing the photo book, including the typography.
